Benefits Delivered by a Content Delivery Network (CDN)

Haylix has long worked with Content Delivery Networks (CDNs) and over time seen the benefits and number of CDN providers grow. Importantly we have also
seen a significant increase in the types of CDN offerings to support small and mid-tier organisations as well as their traditional enterprise organisation client. Haylix recommends constantly for our clients to give serious consideration when investigating a CDN for their sites. 

In a market that was once dominated by a single provider a growing list of CDN providers now support markets. Feature sets and price points go hand in hand and typically the higher the cost equates to a CDN that delivers more customisable controls for the site.

What this article does not dive into are other benefits offered by a CDN including, and importantly, protection from DDoS attacks and other malicious attacks that would be defended by a Web Application Firewall (WAF).

What Are The Core Benefits of a CDN?

When describing the core benefits of a CDN we often refer to the 3 core benefits described below: 

  1. Improved site performance resulting in improved delivery times of the site to users. This is achieved by caching static content at the CDN Point of Presence (PoP). All Haylix CDN partners have PoP locations in Melbourne and Sydney and further in key Asian, European and Nth American locations. AS per the earlier example delivering a site in South Africa is quicker from South Africa than from Australia. Further delivering content out of cache is significantly quicker than delivering content than requires processing prior to delivery
  2. Site protection from DDoS attacks and other malicious attacks such as XSS and SQL Injection attacks. DDoS attacks are managed via the CDN infrastructure. The origin server is placed behind the CDN. The CDN will absorb the DDoS attack and still allow traffic to the site. Web Application Firewalls (WAF) enable firewall rules to be created at the CDN layer. These rules will interrogate traffic and perform scripted functions preventing potentially malicious traffic accessing the origin server
  3. Reduction is data fees. In a number of Haylix sites we are able to work with the digital agency to achieve up to a 90% offload at the CDN. This means 90% of all requests are handled by the CDN and do not need to be served by the origin servers. This reduces the infrastructure needs and associated data costs.

    The image here tells an amazing story and are actual figures from a Haylix client. The total bandwidth shows how much data the site trafficked over a one month period. The Cached Bandwidth represents the data delivered straight from the CDN and the Uncached Bandwidth is delivered from the origin servers. That means that of the 21TB of data ~91% was processed by the CDN. The server infrastructure and licensing fees needed to support this traffic at the origin would outweigh the cost of the CDN
